Gerardo with "Don't Disrespect the House, 2017" for his thesis show in the Texas State Art Gallery.
Heavily inspired by drag artistry, the figurative paintings in Gerardo's work represent an unapologetically queer subculture that is lacking accurate recognition in current society.
A highly sensationalized Dionysian, subversive mix of high and low, highlights the intensely integrated color sensibility alongside an untraditional male gaze to incite freedom and fun. Gerardo's bright and symbolic work allows spectators to question what their eyes perceive and to search in between the brushstrokes for their conclusion.
